Performer Tony Daryll: “I can hold a note twice as long as I just
did”
Daryll performs “Malagueña Salerosa” (1947), a popular Mexican tune, and holds a note
for about thirty seconds. In his second
attempt, he makes it to 51 seconds, almost reaching his goal. With Steve as his
mentor, the multilingual Daryll would make several appearances in nightclubs
and on talk shows, but was out of show business by the early 70s. He did manage to record one album, Steve
Allen Presents Tony Daryll (Dot 1966).
Lela Ernst and Wayne Farrell from Cranston, Rhode Island are engaged,
but: “He has to get rid of his house pet…My pet is a 260-pound snake 18 feet
long (largest in U.S.)”
Farrell has kept
the python in his home for two years, but has sold it to the Bronx Zoo. Though the show presents this as an ultimatum
from his fiancé, Lela and Wayne would continue to raise snakes and other
reptiles together in their home. A 1977
profile said they had 13 large snakes, five lizards, an iguana and a baby
alligator, not to mention two children.
Farrell’s huge snake is shown after the segment.
Special guests Tom Poston, Peggy Cass,
Orson Bean and Kitty Carlisle (the To
Tell the Truth panel) challenge our panel in a game of old-time radio and
television trivia, similar to the one played with the Columbia University
students just six weeks ago (
E634
). In
this version, panelists ask questions directly to their opponents, while Steve
keeps score.
