Betsy, Bill, Bess, Henry

Steve thanks Henry for subbing the week before, and also thanks the members of the California Supreme Court for making it possible for him to be here this week.  This is a facetious reference to their ruling last week upholding a rule which disqualified him from running for Congress because he had not been registered as a Democrat long enough.

Studio usher [Dick Wininger] is a student at City College in New York, and in preparing for a test: “I studied for 45 hours non-stop…I fell asleep during the exam and they couldn’t wake me up”

Mrs. Dan Ryan, County Commissioner from Chicago and Mrs. Lydon Wild, a member of the Chicago Board of Education: “We have to find blind dates for 2000 cadets”
The Army-Air Force football game will take place in Chicago on November 6, and two thousand cadets will descend on the town, apparently requiring companionship.  Chicago women aged 17-23 were asked to apply for this assignment, and more than five thousand of them responded.  It fell to these two women to sort everything out.  Ruby Ryan succeeded her husband as County Commissioner following his 1961 death.  He is the Dan Ryan for whom a well-known Chicago expressway is named.

Special guest Durward Kirby arranges entertainment, provided by the panel, for Betsy Palmer’s birthday.  Betsy sings “Honey Bun” (1949) from South Pacific, and as her performance is played back, the other three pantomime to her recording.  Through some split screen wizardry we see Bill’s face atop Bess’ torso and arms, which are atop Henry’s legs.  The studio audience loves it.  In addition to his continuing work as co-host of Candid Camera, Kirby is in rehearsals for a new comedy heading for Broadway called Me and Thee (1965).  The show would officially open on December 7, and would close the same day.
