Betsy is off to Boston for out-of-town
tryouts for her new Broadway show Roar
like a Dove (1964). She and the show
would reach Broadway on May 21, but the show would only run for twenty
performances. She would not miss any panel appearances during this period.
Henry tells of his experiences using
Dr. Thorp’s method of playing blackjack from the week before. He made money using the system but found the
process boring and mechanical. On the
last day, he played his own way, and lost all his winnings.
[Seymour Rouleau] from the south of France visited the New York
World’s Fair on the first day: “I was the first person turned in to the
Children’s Lost and Found”
Monsieur Rouleau,
who got separated from his French tour group, is an adult, but does not speak
English. Jordan speaks to him in French
and translates his answers for the panel.
The World’s Fair opened on April 21, and operated in 1964 and again in
1965 from April to October. Its iconic
Unisphere still stands in Flushing Meadows, Queens. The Fair would be beset by controversies and
financial woes, as many similar World’s Fair endeavors would be over the years.
Due to a falling out with the international governing body, this wasn’t even an
official World’s Fair, and many nations, including Canada, the Soviet Union and
the United Kingdom, did not participate.
Still, some 80 countries and dozens of American corporations did take
part, and the Fair introduced a curious public to international cuisine
(including fondue and Belgian waffles) and to the dawning of both the Space Age
and the Computer Age.
Mr. X: “I’m a pitcher with the Houston Colts baseball team…Last
week I pitched a no-hitter and lost the game”
Ken Johnson
pitched a complete-game no-hitter on April 23 against the Cincinnati Reds but
lost the game 1-0. The only run came in
the ninth inning, when Reds player Pete Rose reached second base on Johnson’s
own error, advanced on a ground out, and scored on a second error. Johnson would play for many teams over the
course of a 13-year major league career.
He remains the only player in MLB history to throw a no-hit game and lose. The Colts, more precisely known as the Colt
.45s, would become the Astros in 1965.
Special guest Olivia de Havilland brings along French
clichés and slang expressions that have been translated literally, and the
panel tries to come up with an American equivalent. For example, the French phrase that literally
translates as “My hair hurts” means “I have a hangover”. De Havilland is soon to appear in the film Lady in a Cage (1964).
