Dr. Lee Davenport from New York is going to put his hand in front
of a machine, and: “Our television picture will go off the air”
Dr. Davenport
is the president of the research department for General Telephone and
Electronics (GTE) and his device is a gas laser system through which the studio
signal has been routed. The first laser
was built in 1960, so the concept is still relatively new to the general
public. Garry says this is the first
program in history to be transmitted by laser.
Earlier, while working for MIT, Davenport was responsible for developing
an advanced radar system used during World War Two.
Andrew Roberts from Flushing, New York: “President Kennedy gave me
a medal for heroism”
Twelve-year-old
Andrew was one of several school safety patrol guards who all won American
Automobile Association Gold Lifesaver Medals.
The president presented the awards in Washington on May 9. In January, Andrew pulled two kindergarten
children out of the path of a speeding car.
Special guest Robert Goulet challenges
the panel with foreign lyrics to popular American songs. He performs “If Ever I Would Leave You,”
(1960) his signature tune from the Broadway musical Camelot (1960), in Portuguese.
Goulet is about to start a two-week engagement at the Town & Country
Club in New York, and will begin a nationwide tour in the summer. He has also released the album The Wonderful World of Love (Columbia
1963).
