Garry mentions that tonight’s show will be slightly truncated.  CBS sold a five-minute paid political announcement to air after Secret. As such, there are only two segments.

Mr. X and Mr. Y: “We went 7 miles into the ocean…straight down (World’s Record)”
Jacques Picard and Navy Lt Don Walsh explored Challenger Deep, the deepest part of the Marianas Trench, aboard the bathyscaphe Trieste, which was designed by Jacques’ father Auguste.   Their journey in January was the first time any device, manned or unmanned had reached the deepest known part of the Pacific Ocean.  The pair would be heavily decorated for their accomplishment.  The Trieste would continue to be used for deep-sea missions, including notably in 1963 to locate the wreckage of a nuclear submarine in the Atlantic.  Decommissioned in 1966, today it is on display at the US Navy Museum.

Special Guest John Payne brings cliffhangers from classic silent films, and the panel has to predict how the hero escapes from each dilemma.  He also creates a cliffhanger involving Henry and a rotating saw in order to get the Secret audience to tune in next week.  With the election less than three weeks away, Garry mentions that Payne has been traveling the country making speeches to encourage people to vote.  Payne was a handsome and versatile actor possibly best remembered today for his lead role in the Christmas classic Miracle on 34th Street (1947).
