A guest is Pauline McCarthy, a housewife from Cleveland, Ohio
As part of a far-reaching stunt, Garry Moore and his team plucked a "typical housewife" out of the Midwest and turned her into a TV star for a week. Mrs. McCarthy, a mother of three, appeared not only on Secret, but on Garry's morning show throughout the week. She also played roles on the soap operas Love of Life and The Edge of Night.
Bathsheba the Pig: "I'm starring in a Broadway show."
Bathsheba is currently playing Salomey in the musical stage version of Al Capp's comic strip Li'l Abner. In its day, Li'l Abner was among the most popular comic strips in the country, and a cultural phenomenon. In the comics, Salomey was the beloved pig of the Yokum family (the name is a pun on both salami and the Biblical character Salome), and often was considered to be even more intelligent than the male members of the clan. Bathsheba's handler is Lorrain D'Essen, who runs an agency that provides animal talent for the entertainment industry. She would return the following year (
E302) with more members of her menagerie.
Special guest Andy Griffith
We don't know what secret Andy had for the panel tonight, but we know why he's there. After a successful run on Broadway in No Time for Sergeants (1955-57), Griffith is set to make his film debut in A Face in the Crowd (1957). The film, a savage satiric skewering of broadcast media, got mixed reviews in its initial run, but time has been kind to its reputation. Somewhat ironically given the film's subject matter, Andy is using the power of television to promote the film. In addition to his appearance here, he is also scheduled to show up on The Tonight Show, Strike It Rich, The Steve Allen Show, The Big Payoff and Edward R Murrow's Person to Person, all in the span of a week or so.
Bathsheba and her handler Lorrain D'Essen amuse Garry and Andy backstage. Among the onlookers are stagehand Lon Masterson (far left) and music director Norman Paris (far right).
