A salute to France with special guest Hedy Lamarr
Though one source says that the glamorous European actress sat as a panelist, overwhelming contemporary evidence suggests that she was the night's special guest instead. As for the Francophile content, one newspaper columnist dismissed it as, "A Gallic mish-mash of visiting French celebrities interpreted by Hedy Lamarr." Described as "The Most Beautiful Woman In Film" (it was the title of a 2010 biography) Lamarr was a highly sought after actress for nearly three decades, first in Europe and eventually in the US. Her career started to decline in the fifties, and she soon dropped out of the industry. In fact, this was probably one of her last on-camera appearances. She would sue Warner Brothers in 1974 over the running joke in Blazing Saddles (1974) that Harvey Korman's character was named "Hedley Lamarr." At the time, Mel Brooks said he was flattered, and that Miss Lamarr just never got the joke.
