A celebration of sports features a diverse array of athletes as contestants, some better known than others. They include Jack Dempsey, the legendary boxer; Gertrude Ederle, the first woman to swim the English Channel; Cookie Lavagetto, a four-time All-Star infielder primarily for the Brooklyn Dodgers; Paul Hahn, a golfing trick-shot artist; and Pat Flaherty, a race car driver who had won the Indianapolis 500 earlier this same day. Dempsey (60 years old here) and Ederle (50) are legends from an earlier time. Similarly, Lavagetto's playing career (1934-1947) is behind him, though he would go on to spend several seasons a manager. Hahn and Flaherty are contemporary, but the least known of the bunch. Flaherty's career would be shortened by an injury just a few months after this appearance. His Indy 500 win would stand as the primary significant accomplishment of his relatively brief career.
