102-year-old
George Worcester of New Haven, Connecticut: “I rode on Abe Lincoln’s campaign
train in 1864”
Worcester
was a twelve-year-old living in Maine in 1864.
Hannibal Hamlin, Lincoln’s vice-president at the time and also a Maine
native, knew Worcester’s mother and invited them to ride on the train to visit
Worcester’s grandfather. Hamlin was
campaigning with Lincoln for reelection in early 1864, but by June he had been
thrown off the Republican ticket by party leaders in favor of Andrew Johnson
from the politically key border state of Tennessee. Nevertheless, Hamlin continued to campaign
for the Lincoln-Johnson ticket. Lincoln
was reelected, and Johnson became the 17th president of the United States after
Lincoln’s 1965 assassination.
Jinx the Chimp:
“I do an impression of Liberace”
Jinx is
owned and trained by Darlene Selleck, who originally wanted him simply as a
pet. Trained chimpanzees (such as Zippy,
who made multiple Secret appearances)
were a popular mainstay of fifties television. Jinx was particularly known for
his ice skating prowess. “Jinx and
Darlene” would perform on television and in a variety of circuses for more than
a decade. Jinx “retired” in 1966 when,
like a lot of older trained chimps, he became harder to control.
Special Guest
Linda Darnell: “I have a pet monkey under my coat”
Darnell
achieved movie stardom at a young age.
She was playing adult romantic leads while still in her teens. In an up-and-down career marred by bouts of
alcoholism, she made a few good pictures in the 1940s, but like so many
beautiful young actresses, never achieved the sort of stardom expected of
her. She would die in a house fire in
1965 at the age of 41.
