Martin Mulkern: “I
was a hostage in the Boston Prison Riot”
On January 18, four armed prisoners at Charlestown prison held five guards and eighteen
fellow prisoners hostage for 82 hours against the combined forces of the
National Guard, Boston police, and the other prison guards. This became
known as the Cherry Hill riots, named for the infamous area of the prison where
the most unruly prisoners were held. The
rioters told negotiators about the poor conditions of the prison, the rigid
penal code in the state, and the bleak future they faced. In the end, the rioters would face no
additional charges for their violence, and by the end of the year, all inmates
would be moved to a new prison and Charlestown closed.
[Ed McLaughlin]: “I was
Henry Morgan’s drill instructor in the Army”
Specifically during World War II, as we learn.
Special guest Gloria DeHaven sings a song she wrote.
DeHaven is joined by five members of the studio audience, all of whom have written songs. It's unclear whether any of the audience members get to sing their compositions. DeHaven was an MGM contract player throughout the 1940s. She appeared mostly in comedies and musicals, usually in
supporting roles. Though major stardom eluded her, as a link to the
glamour of “Old Hollywood” she would become a popular guest in TV series
of the 70s and 80s. We can't find any record (or recording) of any song attributed to her as a writer.
At the end, a cake is wheeled out onstage and everyone sings "Happy Birthday" to Garry, who will turn 40 on January 31st.
