The panelists sit a little out of order on this show so that Jayne can be introduced last. She is
wearing an outrageously elaborate holiday headdress, complete with a large
candle.
Edward Fouts of Columbus, KS: “I’ve saved up 338
miles of string (rolled in a ball)”
The jovial Fouts and his achievement
first found national attention when an AP writer told his tale in 1947. A photo story revisiting Fouts, showing him
perched atop his gigantic creation, made the papers again in early December of
1953, which brought him to the attention of the Secret staff. The ball of string is rolled out at the end
of the segment. As late as 1973, Fouts’
widow was maintaining the collection.
Mr X: “I brought a Korean orphan home with
me.”
CPO Vincent Paladino found
four-year-old Lee Kyung Soo wandering the streets of Inchon about a year
earlier. Stories covering his challenges
in adopting Lee, complete with adorable photos of the boy in a tiny military
uniform, appeared in newspapers for weeks leading up to his appearance
here. Santa Claus appears and showers
the child with gifts.
Special Guest Paul Hartman: “I saw Henry
Morgan’s mommy kissing Santa Claus”
In an elaborate setup with the panel
offstage, Eve Morgan (whom Henry hasn’t seen in two years) plants a kiss on
Santa. It all leads to a heartwarming
reunion of the Morgans. Hartman (who has little to actually do here) was a
light comedic actor appearing on ABC at the time in the sitcom The Pride of the Family. The single-season series was notable as an
early vehicle for Natalie Wood, who played Hartman’s teen daughter.
Following the game, Santa joins Garry
onstage. He is the Macy’s Santa, and
says that some 40,000 kids sit on his lap in the weeks leading up to Christmas. Garry presents Santa with a trip to Miami
Beach and tickets to the Orange Bowl football game.
